Wedding gifts that aren't on the registry

The Ninth Salon Journal · By Sophie, founder · Published 20 August 2026

First, the etiquette disclaimer: the registry exists for a reason, and buying from it is never wrong. But the registry has a structural flaw. It is a list of things the couple needs, and nobody ever wept over a stand mixer. If you are close enough to want your gift remembered, you need the other category: things they would never think to ask for.

The couple as a classical painting

Take a photo of the two of them, engagement shoot, wedding day, or simply the one where they look most like themselves, and have it painted as a classical portrait: a Renaissance couple, a Baroque pair, Belle Époque elegance. Transparency first: Ninth Salon is our studio and this is what it does, from one clear photo of them both, in about a minute, with the result visible before you pay anything.

Delivered as a gallery-wrapped canvas (5 to 7 business days, ready to hang), it is the wedding gift that ends up above the fireplace, which is more than the fondue set can say. If the wedding is past, it also makes an unbeatable first-anniversary or cotton anniversary gift.

Three more off-registry ideas that land

The date-night bank

Twelve envelopes, each a planned and prepaid evening: the restaurant reservation, the concert tickets, the babysitter number for later years. You are gifting the habit, not the meal.

The vow keeper

Their vows, letterpressed or hand-lettered on archival paper. Costs little, requires you to actually get the text, which is exactly what makes it intimate.

The skill they'll share

A course for two: pottery, tango, bread. Couples remember who gave them their Thursday-night thing.

The rule that sorts it all

Registry gifts furnish the house. Off-registry gifts furnish the marriage. Bring one from each list and you have won the wedding.
